Egypt‘s antiquities authority chose to close the largest of the Giza pyramids following rumors that groups would try to hold spiritual ceremonies on the site at 11:11 A.M. on Nov. 11, 2011.  According to the spokesperson for the authorities, the closure was unrelated to the rumors. However, the local media has carried unconfirmed reports that unidentified groups would try to hold “Jewish” or “Masonic” rites on the site to take advantage of mysterious powers coming from the pyramid on the rare date. It appears that a fraction of society every where will continue to move “mysteriously”, despite the cosmopolitan and technological civilization of today. Different, unfounded fears from the past appear to linger in human psyche around the world. At some point in history someone uses a fear story for their personal advantage. Subsequently, the society doesn’t appear to have a mechanism to clean it up completely. We could dismiss this 11.11.11 related news item as particular to this part of the world. However, even in an industrially advanced country, a politician can get news coverage by raising fears about a ritual from another culture that an opponent was invited to attend.
